Atreyu died by suicide on May 23, 2025, following months of severe bullying at South Sydney High School. Clare McCann, known for her work on Channel [V] and as the founder of the Sydney Women’s International Film Festival, has publicly shared her devastation. She revealed that Atreyu endured relentless bullying, including an attempted drowning and sexual harassment, between February and April 2025. Despite Clare’s repeated reports to the school, the New South Wales Department of Education, and child services, no effective action was taken. Atreyu had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and his mother had hoped that withdrawing him from school in April would aid his recovery. Tragically, the trauma had already taken a deep toll.
In a poignant tribute to her son’s fascination with cryogenics, Clare has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $195,000 to cryogenically preserve Atreyu’s body. She believes this could offer a future opportunity for revival, honoring Atreyu’s interest in the concept. The funds are needed within seven days to cover the preservation process, transportation, medical and legal costs, and to establish a trust in Atreyu’s name. As of May 26, the campaign had raised just over $2,700.
Clare has expressed her intent to use any excess funds to support anti-bullying initiatives, aid affected families, and pursue legal action against institutions she believes failed her son. She described Atreyu as a kind, creative, and deeply loved boy, and is determined to honor his memory by advocating for systemic change.
The New South Wales Department of Education and state officials have extended their condolences and are providing support to students and staff affected by this tragedy. This incident underscores the urgent need for effective anti-bullying measures in schools and systemic accountability.
